Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in SA

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a deregulation process that began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next step, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater degree of competition the energy market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. The states have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

The South Australia electricity market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This enabled consumers to change to a provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

There is only one main electricity distributor in SA

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a some remote areas of SA is distributed by other companies.

Tips to reduce your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here are some easily implemented tips for reducing your electricity consumption

  • Turn off appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A hot water bottle is a cheap alternative to an electric blanket.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use your clothes dryer less often. Dry your clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Dress for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (jumper, warm socks, beanie, booties).
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the cool air in, then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so that you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Reduce the use of lights by using natural light where possible.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and have made the decision to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to change your mind and remain with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house if you change to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. However, the switchover can't take place until after your current provider has sent you their final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we inform your present provider of your move away from them. The actual switch to your new provider will not happen straight away, though, because your current provider needs to do a meter reading one final time. and then send you their final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
